This is one of my favorite books EVER.
Não sei o quão famosa essa história ainda é hoje em dia, mas eu tenho um carinho muito especial por ela. Quando conheci esse livro, lá em 2001, alguma coisa tocou profundamente no meu coração e eu li esse livro todos os anos enquanto estava na escola, pelo menos uma vez por ano. Era uma edição parecida com essa, da Editora 34; mas esse livro agora não é emprestado, e sim comprado em 2017 ou depois.
I'm not sure how famous is this story nowadays, but I have a special spot in my heart for it. When I got to know this book, back there in 2001, something touched deeply in my heart and I've read this book every single year while in school, at least once a year. It was an edition like this, from Editora 34; but this book is not borrowed anymore, I bought it in 2017 or later.
Eu amo essa edição do livro por vários motivos. Uma é a tradução da Ana Maria Machado - eu já li em outras versões e nenhuma capta o espírito da história com tanta maestria. Eu gosto muito de poder ler as coisas na sua língua original (quando é algo que eu sei ler, hahaha) e já li A Princesinha em inglês, considero essa tradução PT-BR em específico excelente.
I love this edition of the book for many reasons. One is the translation made by Ana Maria Machado - I have already read the book in other portuguese verisons and none of them captured the spirit of the story so masterfully. I really like reading things on their original language (if it is something I know how to read, hahaha) and A Little Princess translated to this PT-BR version is excellent.
Outro motivo que me deixa encantada são as ilustrações da Tasha Tudor! O livro tem algumas ilustrações coloridas (capa, frente e verso), algumas ilustrações em preto-e-branco, e algumas feitas só em nanquim!
Another reason that makes me love this book are the illustrations by Tasha Tudor! The book has some colored illustrations (cover, front and back), some in black and white, and some made only in India ink.
Ok, pode ser que então a história não seja conhecida como são os contos de fada, mas ela já foi bem importante - foram 8 adaptações pra filmes, sem contar séries de TV, teatros e musicais. Eu não assisti tudo, mas imagino que eles sigam mais ou menos a história do livro:
Uma menininha chamada Sara, filha de um pai muito rico, sai da Índia para vir estudar numa escola interna/internato na Inglaterra. A vida na escola interna não é bem como ela imaginava, e ela nunca se encaixa muito bem lá; ao mesmo tempo, é sempre muito idolatrada por ser rica, inteligente ou qualquer coisa assim. Daí, COISAS RUINS ACONTECEM. E coisas ruins deixam ela muito mal. E de alguma forma ela encontra forças nas suas crenças, amigas e imaginação.
Ok, maybe the story is not as known as fairytales, but it was quite important once - there were 8 movie adaptations, plus TV series, theater plays and musicals. I haven't watched all of them, but I imagine they will more or less follow the book's story:
A little girl called Sara, daughter of a very rich man, leaves India to study in a boarding school in England. Her life at the boarding school is not quite as she imagined, and she never felt like she truly belong; at the same time, she is very worshipped for being so rich, intelligent and anything of the sorts. Then, BAD THINGS HAPPEN. And bad things leave her miserable. And somehow she finds strenght in her beliefs, friends and imagination.
(Esse foi o melhor jeito de eu descrever o que acontece sem dar nenhum spoiler - embora falar sobre uma história publicada mais de 120 dificilmente possa ser considerado estragar a surpresa, hahaha.)
(This was the best way I could describe what happened without giving any spoilers - even though talking about a story over 120 years old will hardly count as spoiling the surprise, hahaha.)
A Princesinha é uma história que tem um monte de ideias interessantes. Sobre bonecas que andam secretamente, viver uma vida imaginária, ser uma pessoa generosa - de coração aberto, criar suas próprias histórias (alô escritores de fanfic e autores aspirantes!), amar vestidos (mas as roupas não serem mais importante do que você é por dentro), eu poderia passar horas tentando escolher quais dos detalhes que me deixam mais feliz, mas são MUITOS! ♥ Então vou deixar algumas citações aleatórias, e depois, comentar mais...
A Little Princess is a story full of interesting ideas. About dolls that secretly could walk, living an imaginary life, being a generous person - open hearted, creating your own stories (hello fanfic writers and aspiring authors!), loving dresses (but clothes are not more important than who you are inside), I could spend hours trying to choose what are the details that make me the happiest, but there are SO MANY! ♥ So I'll leave some random quotes here, and then comment some more...

Sinceramente, não sei explicar exatamente sobre o que eu enxergo relacionado à Moda Lolita nisso tudo. Seria por ser uma história antiga? Seria por ter uma personagem que gosta de fingir que é uma princesa? Seria por ser um conto absolutamente romântico e gracinha? Seria pela personagem principal usar anáguas? Não é uma explicação fácil ou uma ligação direta, mas ao mesmo tempo, marcas como a BTSSB já fizeram dezenas de peças inspiradas na Sara Crewe. O casaco "A Princessinha" / "Little Princess Coat" teve reedições em diversos anos, mas também fez um elegante vestido flocado com detalhes dos lugares em Londres que a Princesinha esteve, e uma print com a fachada da loja de brinquedos onde Sara comprou a Emily.
Na época do Livejournal tinham muitos posts comparando princesas e lolita, e um blog incrível com posts inspiradores que se chamada "The Princess Portal". Para mim, tudo está relacionado.
Honestly, I can't quite explain what I see on this book that is SO closely related to Lolita Fashion. Is it because it's an antique story? Is it because of the main character, that likes to pretend she is a princess? Is it by bein an absolutely charming and romantic story? Is it because Sara wears petticoats? Not an easy explanation or direct relation, but at the same time, brands like BTSSB have already made pieces inspired by Sara Crewe. The "Little Princess Coat" had several re-releases in many years, but they also made an elegant flocky dress with details of places in London that the Little Princess had been, and a gorgeous printed dress with the façade of the toy shop where Sara bought Emily.
In Livejournal times there were lots of posts comparing princesses and lolita, and an amazing blog with inspiring texts called "The Princess Portal". For me, everything is related.

Parece um livro muito gostosinho, e para mim também parece conversar com lolita. Para mim, princesa e lolita são coisas que andam de mãos dadas. Essa foi a minha citação favorita: "Seja o que for, uma coisa não se altera. Se eu for uma princesa esfarrapada, posso ser uma princesa por dentro. Seria fácil ser princesa vestida de ouro, mas é um triunfo muito maior ser uma princesa o tempo todo, sem ninguém saber." Fiquei super com vontade de ler. Vou procurar uma versão impressa (ou talvez me render à digital)

DeleteEssa citação d'A Princesinha também é a que eu mais associo com lolita (especialmente com aquele conceito de "lolita de coração" / "Lolita at heart", como as meninas que ainda não tinham outfits completos se chamavam antigamente no Livejournal hahaha)
