Em primeiro lugar, o meu plano aqui não é adorar monarquias ou algo do gênero. O mundo está melhor do jeito que está agora, mas gosto do conceito de princesas e castelos, e também é interessante olhar para essas figuras históricas e aprender com elas, ou se inspirar em alguma coisa. Nós que amamos a moda lolita já estamos de alguma forma acostumadas a romantizar as coisas, e acho que olhar para uma rainha famosa não é diferente disso.

In the first place, my plan here is not to worship monarquies or something of the sort. The world is better the way it is now, but I like the concept of princesses and castles, and it is also interesting to look back to these historical figures and learn from them, or get inspired by something. We that love lolita fashion are somehow already used to romanticizing things, and I think that glancing at a famous queen is no different from that.

Então, para contextualizar, Maria Antonieta / Marie Antoinette nasceu na Áustria em 1755 e foi para a França ainda adolescente para se casar. Ah, os casamentos arranjados :P Suponho que essa parte não mereça romance. Fora isso, Maria Antonia (seu nome original austríaco) era uma jovem culta que falava pelo menos três línguas, era uma boa musicista, adorava dançar e colecionar bonecas - ou pelo menos as amava muito! ♥

Then, for context, Marie Antoinette was a royal born in 1755 Austria and went to France as a teenager in order to get married. Oh, the arranged marriages :P I suppose this part deserves no romance. Other than that, Maria Antonia (her original Austrian name) was a educated young woman that spoke at least three languages, was a good musicist, loved to dance and collected dolls - or at least loved them very much! ♥

A vida na corte francesa acentuava a frivolidade de todos, sendo um lugar onde as aparências eram mais importantes do que qualquer coisa. Com Marie não foi diferente, e ela passou a gastar muito tempo e dinheiro com moda, com vestidos e penteados especiais criados só para ela. (Mais aqui.) Como resultado de todas essas atividades de moda, ela ganhou influência sobre todas as damas da corte, por parecer majestosa e também carismática - ela realmente desempenhou bem o papel de rainha.

Life on the french court accentuated everyone's frivolity, being a place in which appearances were more important than anything. With Marie it was no different, and she began to spend a lot of time and money with fashion, with special dresses and hairdos created only for her. (More here.) As a result of all these fashion activities, she gained influence over all the ladies of the court, by looking majestic and also charismatic - she really played well the role of a queen.

No entanto, isso aconteceu também durante um período de grande problemas financeiros na França, por isso é fácil entender por que sua popularidade entre a população começou a diminuir. Even though the rest of the court would spend as much money as her, she quickly became a scapegoat. Things got a bit better as she began to have kids (the duty of a monarch is to keep the dinasty going, right?), but soon other types of gossip against her appeared on the local newspapers, and also on the court.

Aquela famosa frase, “Que comam brioches”, foi algo que ela nunca disse, mas foi atribuída a ela naquela época e por isso as pessoas acreditaram. Ela não era uma pessoa ruim ou uma mulher má, mas estava em uma situação muito complexa em que era culpada por tudo e também não tinha como abrir mão de seus privilégios ou promover mudanças.

That famous phrase, "Let them eat cake", was something that she never said, but it was attributed to her during those times, and thus people believed. She was not a mean person or a bad woman, but she was in a very complex situation in which she was blamed for everything and also had no way of giving up her privileges or promoting change.

Como a França teve a sua tão necessária revolução, muitas pessoas nobres foram condenadas à morte, e Marie foi uma delas. A história diz que ela não teve medo e morreu graciosamente. Apesar de não ser a raiz de todos os problemas da corte, ela ainda é considerada o símbolo do que havia de errado com a realeza.

As France had their much needed revolution, many noble people were sentenced to death, and Marie was one of them. History says she was not scared and died gracefully. Despite not being the root of all the court problems, she is still regarded as the symbol of what was wrong with royalty.

Em Kamikaze Girls, Momoko reverencia o período Rococó como a época frívola em que as pessoas se preocupavam apenas em se agradar com vestidos bonitos, comidas deliciosas, passeios, obras de arte, poesia, bordados e amor. Podemos ver onde ela aprendeu isso (risos). Se você prestar atenção, muitas das atividades favoritas das lolitas atuais incluem as mesmas - vestidos fofos, comida fofa, arte, ler romances, passear... As influências ainda estão lá! ❤

In Kamikaze Girls, Momoko revered the Rococo period as the frivolous time when people just took care of pleasing themselves with pretty dresses, delicious food, strolls, works of art, poetry, embroidery and love. We can see where she learned it from (laugh). If you pay attention, much of the current lolita's favorite activies include the same - cute dresses, cute food, art, reading romances, strolling... The influences are still there! ❤

Ribbon City meetup

Existem muitas marcas que reconhecem a influência do Rococó, mas principalmente a de Maria Antonieta, por isso seu nome aparece em diversas peças lolita. Às vezes é uma estampa rococó, às vezes tem seu retrato impresso, e outras vezes apenas emula seu estilo de vestido de corte - duas lindas partes de cada lado com uma parte central/inferior em cor contrastante, ou com decoração extra. Mostrarei alguns exemplos abaixo, mas há mais no Lolibrary.

There are many brands that recognize the Rococo influence, but especially Marie Antoinette's, so her name appears in several lolita pieces. Sometimes it's a rococo print, sometimes it has her portrait printed on, and some other times it just emulates her court dress style - two beautiful parts to each side with a central/under part in a contrasting color, or with extra decoration. I will show some examples down below, but there's more on Lolibrary.

Alguns são Versailles no Bara (apelidado de BeruBara, ou Lady Oscar) de Riyoko Ikeda, o filme Marie-Antoinette de 2006, de Sofia Coppola, Uma Nação, Um Rei (2018), Adeus, Minha Rainha (2012), O Enigma do Colar (2001), La Révolution Française (1989), Maria Antonieta, Rainha da França (1956), Marie-Antoinette (1938)... Acho BeruBara especialmente interessante porque você tem o mangá, mais a versão live action e uma versão em anime, e são um pouco ficcionais e mais leves que muitas outras histórias. Por último, mas não menos importante, se você estiver interessado na vida de Maria Antonieta, leia livros de história, biografias (especialmente a de Antonia Fraser!) e literatura aprofundada! Eles lhe darão uma noção melhor de quem ela era, de uma forma que meu breve post não consegue explicar. A página da Wikipédia é um bom começo, pois cita vários livros, mas lembre-se que o conteúdo é um pouco diferente se você ler em português, inglês, alemão ou francês.

Last but not least, if you're interested on Marie Antoinette's life, please read history books, biographies (especially the one by Antonia Fraser!) and in-deep literature! They will give you a better sense of who she was, in ways my short essay cannot clarify. The wikipedia page is a good start, as it quotes several books, but remember that the content is slightly different if you read it in Portuguese, English, German or French.
